speaking of military items FPO 941 42nd Royal Marines served May 30 1980 until early Sept 1980 can any member verify details and exact date of departure?.

According to the memories of Colonel B. L. Carter in "Tufala Gavman" (Page 136), the Papua New Guineans arrived in Santo to take over from the Anglo-French force on 18 August 1980. The departure was "a few days later" (page 137).

All sources I found say 19 August was the day of the departure. See W. David McIntyre "Winding up the British Empire in the Pacific Islands" page 255: "...as the British and French troops left on 19 August 1980 ......."

There is a short article by Marc Parren in the current issue of Col.Fra about the Operation Titan. He also states that the date of departure was 19.08.1980 and refers to John Roberts, Safeguarding the Nation. The story of the modern Royal Navy, Barnsley 2009.
