Thanks for a very interesting report.

A friend in the USA has notified me of a new type of 40c on 44c overprint. This has the XX style obliterator (replacing xxx).

I don't have any details on issue date but presume it to be a fairly recent addition to the overprint series.

I have a note on my check list of the overprints, while use of the overprints is diminishing, leading to few new issues; new discoveries are almost inevitable.

Here is one such: a 3c on 6c which I suspect was produced some years ago (probably pre-2010).

I think that only one sheet was produced.

The grapevine tells me there's a 6c on 44c overprint recently come into use.

No image as yet, assume it's three small xxx & no idea, as yet (I've asked) why the need.

Presumably needed for a make-up rate? Unless it was a mistake, rather like the 23c.

I'd concur with the suggestion that it is a mistake - like the earlier 23c surcharge. Even when Stephen Joe was still alive and active he was never able to get a firm admission that the 23 cent stamp was a mistake - and he could be pretty persuasive! Everyone knew that was the only real explanation though.

Post Fiji's standard pre-printed order sheet still has the denominations used for the 1995 bird definitive stamp series - which included a 6 cent stamp (and a 23 cent stamps).

I do love the casual approach that Fiji Post always takes when it comes to producing new overprints. The 23c mentioned above, with a question why they did it at all, has come around again. This time with xxx, last time was xx. On top of that, as always, there's some interesting varieties, with R1/1 and R6/1 having xx. Then there's range of No Gap examples R2/9,R5/1 and R5/3.

Thank you for the scan. I also don't understand why a 23c stamp was needed. As for varieties, I suppose that Post Fiji is only concerned to ensure that the 44c value has been obliterated and the new value is unambiguous, so the existence of varieties isn't an issue as far as they are concerned.
It does seem though that someone is creating extra work by re-setting the overprint each time. One would think that a couple of templates are all that are needed, one for single-digit values and one for two digits, with a standard xxx obliterator.
