In the early 1900s, Fr. Emmanuel Rougier bought Washington and Fanning Islands, before he sold them and bought Christmas Island.

For Washington and Fanning Islands, Fr. Rougier created some tokens that were used to pay the local workers.

I have come across a few of the $1 tokens, of which there are two variations.

Attached are photos of both types of the $1 token. Different fonts were used on the $ sign and the capital O in GOOD FOR.

If you are interested in possibly trading for or buying a token or two, please contact me.

Thank you.

Thank you Jim, that is fascinating. I wonder where the tokens were made - Australia maybe?

Fr. Rougier made his stamps for Christmas Island in San Francisco. I have not yet been able to determine where the tokens were made.
