Hello,
I have here a 27 May 1919 cover from Tulagi (Vernon type 4 cancel) to Mr. Hambly (here addressed to 352 Kent St. Sydney), backstamped Sydney Registered 12 June 1919. No big deal so far.
On the reverse is what I would describe as a twocolor handstamp, a red circle with two red stars at left and right and a black 1 in line with the stars on the right side.

I don't know anything about such a handstamp, maybe one of the readers does: help is appreciated!
Thanks and greetings, Roland.

Hi Roland and all,

My comments as follows:
352 Kent Street is now a large building, and even in 1919 I would not think it was a private house.
So my guess is it was sent to a business, and most likely one who supplied goods to the Solomon's?

Could therefore the backstamp be some type of mark applied in these offices on arrival?

Most offices of the period and much later used a double oval date stamp on arrival, but maybe to the letter and not the cover.

Being registered, could have got this in transit; but does not look Australian.

Sorry I cant help any further; amazing to find such items after all these years.
30 years ago I could have asked two well known Solomons collectors in Sydney, Ray Baldwin and Colonel Thompson. Ray was an office manager in Sydney in the 1930's and 1940's and amassed heaps of Pacific Islands covers from commercial mail.

Regards
Tony

I am sure have seen covers addressed to Mr. Hambly from GEIC and other Pacific Islands, he must have been a Philatelist.

Yep, Hambly covers can be found from nearly everywhere in the South Sea. On my New Hebrides internet site there are so many that they are concentrated on a separate page. Goto http://www.ro-klinger.de/NH/ and then to "Correspondences" - "Hambly" ( D.1 ).
Normally he would use 47 Belmont Road, Mosman as adress in the beginning 20s.
As bicolor handstamps were surely not comon in the 1920 I think it was applied later, maybe some collector sign.
